After driving all afternoon on Friday we finally got to Moab and had just enough sun light to hit up the huge sand dune hill across the highway from Arches. It was the perfect beginning to our trip, except that the wind starting picking up and blowing sand into our faces. The sand hill is awesome and best of all it is free. The kids could jump, roll, and get as dirty as they wanted!
Saturday we got an early start and conquered Delicate Arch. It was so rewarding to make it to the top but the cliffs at the view point were a little to close so we couldn't really enjoy the view of Delicate Arch. All that work to be scared that the kids would chase a chipmunk off a cliff! That day we were able to hike Landscape arch too. The kids weren't to happy to go on another hike after just coming off Delicate but they did and were happy to play in a cave of sand as their reward. After we got the adults hikes out of the way, the kids were in heaven with all of the small hikes that they could climb and explore at. One of our favorites was sand dune arch.
They loved being able to climb up to the top (thanks to the help of a very tall Dad). Jumping, playing, and exploring this arch was the perfect end to a hard hiking day. On Sunday Hyrum, Tommy and Caroline were lucky enough to go on a half day river rafting trip on the Colorado. They had so much fun (no pictures though). Tommy fell in while trying to row the raft, it was at a very clam part of the river which makes it even funnier. Even though the river was 55 degrees, Tommy thought he was pretty cool to be the only one to get dumped. The babies and I ventured into Canyonlands National Park and took a scenic drive and some much needed naps.
After the river we went back into Arches to complete our tour. We had a fun night exploring these kid friendly arches and Emily even was able to hike and had fun saying "good hiker." She is determined to keep up with Tommy and Caroline and tried to climb everywhere....made me double think ever letting her get out of the back pack! We decided to hit up the sand dune one more time on our way back into Moab.
This time the kids new the drill and had a competition to see who could get the sandiest...Emily won.
On Monday we took a detour to Dead Horse State Park on our way home. I had so much anxiety about this stop but the look out point was a lot safer than anything at Canyonlands. It was very pretty and the perfect end to a very fun trip!
